Invites applications for Teaching Assistants (Project Assistants)

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), a leading institution for research and training in science and engineering, opened its portals to undergraduate students by starting a four-year Bachelor of Science (Research) Program in 2011. In this context, IISc invites applications for the position of Teaching Assistants (Project Assistants) in the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Materials and Electronics/Computer Science  to help to conduct the laboratory courses of the Bachelor of Science (Research) Program.

These are contractual positions  and candidates will be hired on a renewable (depending on satisfactory performance and conduct) annual contract with an increment of Rs.1500, for a maximum duration of 5 years.  The emoluments will be in the range of Rs.24,000-1500-Rs.30,000 per month (consolidated).

TOTAL NUMBER OF POSITIONS : UR-13, OBC-6, SC-4, ST-2 and one of the position is reserved for physically challenged persons.


Biology: M.Sc in any branch of Life Sciences

Chemistry: M. Sc in any branch of Chemical Sciences

Environmental Sciences: M.Sc/B.Tech/M.Tech in the areas of Environmental Sciences

Materials: M.Sc in Physics/Chemistry or B.E/B.Tech in Materials, Metallurgical, Ceramics, Polymers or Mechanical Engineering. Candidates with M.E/M.Tech degrees will be preferred.

Electronics/Computer Science: M.Sc/BE/B.Tech, in Electronics /Computer science

Physics: M.Sc in Physics

 AGE LIMIT :  The upper age of the candidates should not be more than 30 years as on the last date prescribed in the advertisement for submitting applications with relaxation of       3 years in upper age limit for candidates belonging to OBC and 5 years for SC/ST candidates.


  1. The applicant should have secured First Class as declared by the University in the qualifying examination and the applicants belonging to SC/ST should have secured atleast a Second Class. Those who have completed their qualifying examinations and awarded the degree as on the date of advertisement  only need to apply.
  2. Applicants with higher qualification than what is advertised need not apply.
  3. Applicants will not be permitted to change the category subsequently.
  4. No accommodation will be available on the Institute campus.
  5. Candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC shall enclose a photocopy of the respective caste certificate (in case of OBC in the format prescribed for jobs under Government of India) and similarly Physically challenged candidates shall enclose a copy of the certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed format as applicable.


The selection process would comprise of a Written Test followed by  an interview for short listed candidates to be conducted at the Institute on a date to be specified later.   The candidates called for written test will be displayed on our website at  http://www.iisc.ernet.in/ug/  Please keep visiting our website also for updates, if any.

Apply for Faculty Positions

The Institute welcomes applications from exceptionally bright, motivated, individuals with an established record of independent, high quality research, and commitment to teaching, for positions of Assistant Professors and above in all disciplines of interest to the Institute in Science and Engineering.

For Assistant Professor positions, the prospective candidates must

  • have a Ph.D in the relevant area with a first class at the preceding degree or equivalent with a very good academic record throughout
  • have three years of post-doctoral research experience (relaxable in exceptional cases), and
  • be preferably below 35 years of age.

The position of Assistant Professors will be in PB-3 i.e. `15,600-39,100 with a minimum pay of `30,000/- with a Grade pay `8000/- plus allowances.   After the completion of three years service  in PB-3, they will be placed in PB-4 i.e. `37400-67000 with a Grade pay of  `9000/- plus allowances.

For higher positions, the prospective candidates, in addition to having a Ph.D in the relevant area, are expected to have made outstanding contributions in the chosen area of research and also guided doctoral students.

The position of Associate Professor will be in PB-4 i.e. `37,400-67,000 with a minimum pay of `42,800/- with a Grade pay `9500/- plus allowances.

The position of Professor will be in PB-4 i.e. `37,400-67,000 with a minimum pay of `48,000/- with a Grade pay of  `10,500/- plus allowances.

Women candidates and applicants belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are especially encouraged to apply.

The Institute provides partial support to cover relocation expenses for a new faculty member, and also provides a significant start-up research grant. In addition, the Institute provides Cumulative Professional Development Allowance (CPDA) of  `3 lakhs for every block of 3 years on a  reimbursable basis to meet expenses for  participating in both national and international conferences, paying the membership fee of various professional bodies and contingent expenses. Loans for the purchase of computers, reimbursement of a part of the expenses on personal telephone/mobile phones are also available.  The faculty and their families are also covered by an attractive Contributory Health Services Scheme. Modest on-campus accommodation is also provided to new faculty members.

The Infosys Chair Visiting Professorships

The Infosys Foundation has endowed Visiting Professorships in Mathematics and Physics at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The purpose of these Professorships is to bring distinguished scientists in the broad areas of Physical and Mathematical Sciences to the IISc campus for collaborative research interactions.

They should also help carry out research with  subject coordinators.

Qualification: BE/BTech in Chem. Engg., Electronics and Communication or allied disciplines Job Description:  PA’s are expected to set up set up chemical reaction systems/ thermodynamics and gas solid reaction systems, develop simple experimental set ups for college/university chemistry/physics. Should be able to provide computational assistance in areas such as  Density functional theory and Quantum Chemical Calculations.
