What are the programs available at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore? How can I get into IISc?

  1. Bachelor of Science (Research) program

 

  1. Is there any course available at IISc after 12th Standard?

Yes, from 2011 onwards, 4 years Bachelor of Science (Research) program is offered at IISc. The candidate must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in +2/12th Standard. In addition, the candidate need to qualify in one of the national tests – KVPY/  IIT-JEE (Main) or (Advance)/ NEET.

  1. b. What are the subjects offered in Bachelor of Science (Research) program?

There is no specific subject offered in Bachelor of Science (Research) program. The student must study Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Biology,  Earth and Environmental Science, Materials. Only in the fourth year a specialized subject will be given to the student based on the interest and performance of the student in the subject.

  1. What is the duration for Bachelor of Science (Research) program?

4     years (8 semesters).

  1. I am a NRI candidate am I eligible to apply for Bachelor of Science (Research) program?

 

Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) applicants for the Admissions at the Institute.

Persons of Indian origin holding non-Indian passports are eligible to apply for admission to the academic programs of IISc provided they hold an Overseas Citizenship of India as per section 7B(1) of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955.  In addition, they need to satisfy all the eligibility criteria for admission prescribed for Indian citizens.

Persons of Indian origin holding foreign passports and not holding an Overseas Citizenship of India as per section 7B(1) of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955 can seek admission through International Students Admission process.

  1. Can I apply for Biology in the undergraduate program?

No, there is no specific subject offered in Bachelor of Science (Research) program. You can take biology as major subject in the courses.

 

  1. Is there Aeronautical course available at IISc?

No, there is no Aeronautical course available at IISc for 10+2 candidates.

 

  1. Is there any Engineering course offered at IISc for +2 candidates?

No, there is no Engineering course offered at IISc for 10+2 candidates.

  1. When does the semester start?

                        Semester starts from 1st working day of August every year.

 

  1. When will the application form available for undergraduate program?

                    Online application will be available from 1st of February every year till end of April. There is no offline application form.

 

  1. How to fill an online application?

Applicant has to register online http://admissions.iisc.ac.in link and clicking on “Newuser Registration/Login” then select UG program and again click on “New user to register click here“ . Applicant must use his email ID to register (email ID cannot be changed later) preferably gmail account ID. After registration a verification email will be sent to the registered email account, by confirming the email one can start filling the online application.

  1. Course program (M Tech/ M Des/ M Mgt)

 

  1. What is the selection procedure for admission to M Tech/M Des/M Mgt programs?

M Tech admission selection is only through GATE. M Des admission selection is through GATE/CEED followed by a Design Aptitude Test and interview; M Mgt admission selection is through GATE/GMAT/CAT followed by a group discussion and interview.

  1. Is there any interview or aptitude test in the selection procedure for admission to M Tech programs?

Yes, M Tech program in Electronics System Engg, Climate Science, Computational Science, Earth Science, and Nanoscience and Engineering has an aptitude test and interview after short-listing based on GATE score.

  1. Is there any interview or aptitude test in the selection procedure for admission to M Des program?

Yes, M Des program has a Design Aptitude Test and interview after short-listing based on GATE/CEED score.

  1. Is there any group discussion/interview in the selection procedure for admission to M Mgt program?

Yes, M Mgt program has a group discussion and interview after short-listing based on GATE/CAT/GMAT score.

  1. Is there non-GATE admission to M Tech/M Des/M Mgt programs?

No, there are no non-GATE admissions available for M Tech/ M Des/ M Mgt programs. GATE/ CEED/ GMAT/ CAT score is needed for admission to M Tech/ M Des/ M Mgt programs accordingly.

  1. I am a AMIE degree holder, am I eligible to apply to M Tech/Research programs?

If you are a B Sc followed by AMIE degree holder then you are eligible to apply for M Tech/ Research programs with a valid GATE score.

  1. I am a Diploma plus AMIE degree holder, am I eligible to apply to M Tech/ Research programs?

No, you are not eligible to apply to any of the programs at IISc.

  1. What are the criteria for applying to M Tech/ M Des programs?

Minimum of BE/B Tech second class with a valid GATE score is the criteria for M Tech/ M Des programs with a valid GATE/CEED.

  1. What is the duration for M Tech/M Des/ M Mgt programs?

The duration is of 2 years (4 semesters).

  1. I wish to apply for M Tech and M Des programs should I apply through a single application or should I have to fill two separate application forms?

One application form is sufficient to apply to M Tech and M Des programs, a maximum of 5 preferences can be entered in one form.

  1. When does the semester start?

Semester starts from 1st working day of August every year.

  1. When will the application form available for Course programs?

Online application will be available from 1st of February every year till mid of March. There is no offline application form.

  1. How to fill an online application?

  1. What are the streams/disciplines available in Integrated Ph D program?

Integrated Ph D in Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences and Mathematical Sciences are available streams/disciplines.

  1. I am a M Sc, Biotechnology candidate and in II semester, with B Sc in Microbiology, am I eligible to apply for Integrated Ph D program?

Yes you are eligible to apply for the Integrated Ph D program, but you need to clear JAM examination.

  1. I am in B Sc final year candidate with Physics, Maths & Computer Science, am I eligible to apply for Integrated Ph D program?

If you are interested in Physical or Mathematical Sciences in Integrated Ph D program, you are eligible to apply with valid JAM score.

  1. I am a B Tech, Biotechnology candidate can I apply for Integrated Ph D and Research programs?

You are eligible to apply for both Integrated Ph D and the Research programs. With regard to Integrated Ph D you need to clear JAM examination and Research program GATE is needed.

  1. What are the criteria for applying to Integrated Ph D program?

Applicant with a First Class B Sc degree and valid JAM score is eligible to apply.

Applicant with a First Class BE/B Tech degree in Biotechnology and valid JAM score in BT paper is eligible to apply.

Applicant with a First Class BE/B Tech degree in any Engineering and valid JAM score in Mathematics or Mathematical Statistics is eligible to apply.

  1. What is the duration for Integrated Ph D programme?

7 years.

  1. When does the semester start?

                    Semester starts from 1st working day of August every year.

  1. What are the criteria and eligible qualification to apply for Research-M Tech (Res) program?

Applicant with BE/B Tech/B Sc (Engg) in Engineering (minimum second class) with a valid GATE score are eligible to apply to Research program. The option of joining only to M Tech (Res) program must be given at the time of interview to the department interview committee.

  1. What are the criteria and eligible qualification to apply for Research-Ph D program?

Applicant with M Tech/ ME/ M Des/ M Sc(Engg)/ [MBA or MS or PGDBM or PGDCA (post BE / B Tech)] / M Sc (Tech)/ M Arch/ M Pharm/ MBBS/ M Agri/ M V Sc  are eligible to apply to Research-Ph D program. There is no need to qualify in any of the national entrance tests.

Applicant with BE/B Tech/M Sc and a valid GATE score are eligible to apply to Research – Ph D program.

Applicant with BE/B Tech degree from any centrally funded technical institutions, with a minimum CGPA of 8.5 out of 10 or its equivalent either of seventh semester or at the end of eighth semester without GATE score are eligible to apply to Research – Ph D program.

Applicant with M Sc and a valid qualifying certificate from the UGC-NET JRF/ Joint CSIR-UGC NET for JRF/ ICMR JRF/ DBT JRF/ JEST/ NBHM are eligible to apply to Research – Ph D program.

Applicant with MBA (other than post BE/B Tech) and a valid GATE/ UGC NET for JRF certificate are eligible to apply to Research – Ph D program. 

  1. Can I apply specifically to M Tech (Res) or to Ph D in Research form?

No, you cannot apply specifically to M Tech (Res) or to Ph D program in the Research online form, there is no such option in the Research form.  You can give your option of joining only to M Tech (Res) or to Ph D program at the time of interview to the department interview committee.

  1. I am a M Tech/ ME/ M Des/ M Sc(Engg)/ [MBA or MS or PGDBM or PGDCA (post BE / B Tech)] / M Sc (Tech)/ M Arch/ M Pharm/ MBBS/ M Agri/ M V Sc candidate should I appear in any of the national entrance test for admission to Research program?

You are eligible to apply for the Research program without appearing in any national entrance test. You will be shortlisted for interview based on your performance in the Master’s degree indicated above. Weightage will be given to those students who have cleared any of the national entrance tests either in the current year or in the previous years. Also, weightage will be given to those who have publications.

  1. I am a M Sc, Biotechnology candidate and in II semester, with B Sc in Microbiology am I eligible to apply for Integrated Ph D programme?

Yes you are eligible, you can apply for the Integrated Ph D programme.

  1. I am a BE, ECE candidate have no valid Gate score am I eligible for M Tech (Res) program?

All BE/ B Tech/ B Sc (Engg) candidates (in Engineering disciplines) need to have a valid GATE score for any of the Research programs.

  1. I wish to apply for 3 departments should I apply through a single application or should I have to fill three separate application forms?

One application form is sufficient to apply to 3 departments in Research program.

  1. I am a B Sc Computer Science, Mathematics, Electronics candidate am I eligible to apply for M Tech (Res) program?

No you are not eligible, you need to have a M Sc degree to become eligible to apply for Research (M Tech (Res)) program with a valid GATE score.

  1. When does the semester starts at IISc?

                       Semester starts from 1st working day of August every year.

  1. What is the duration of a Ph D program?

Minimum of 3 years and maximum of upto 6 years.

  1. I am a B Tech with MBA should I have to write Entrance Test for Ph D in Management Studies?

Candidates with MBA (post BE/B Tech) no need to write IISc Entrance Test. You would be called for interview based on your performance in the qualifying degree.

  1. What is the duration for M Tech(Res) program?

2 years six months duration (5 semesters).

  1. Can I apply to more than one program?

Yes you can apply for more than one program based on your qualification but must fill different online forms. There is a link in the Applicant’s interface “Apply for another program” you can use this link for filling another program form.
