IISc Centenary Lecture Series
IIScPress launched its first book in the IISc Centenary Lecture Series (ICLS) in 2009. This series contains books written by distinguished speakers of the IISc Centenary Lectures that commenced in IISc’s centenary Year during 2008-2009 and are continuing beyond that. The first lecture was given by Professor C.N.R. Rao, the National Research Professor and Linus Pauling Research Professor and Honorary President of Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore, India. A book entitled “Trends in Chemistry of Materials” thus became the first book by the IIScPress. The subsequent lectures were delivered by Professor Andrew Viterbi (the Presidential Chair Professor, USC Viterbi School of Engineering, University of Soutern California, USA), Prof. M.S. Swaminathan (Chairman, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai, India), Nicholas D Spencer (ETH, Zurich) and Prof. Michael D. Fayer (Department of Chemistry, Stanford, University). Collected works of Dr.Andrew J. Viterbi, Prof.M.S.Swaminthan, Nicholas D. Spencer and Michael D. Fayer were published subsequently. Efforts are underway to bring out books written by these and other eminent scientists and engineers.
Published ICLS books
Series Editor: Prof. Amaresh Chakrabarti
ICLS 1: Trends in Chemistry of Materials: Selected Research Papers of C N R Rao, C. N. R. Rao.
Price : $ 152
About the Book : This book presents a selection of research articles of Prof. C. N. R. Rao covering a wide range of aspects of the chemistry of materials. This book should provide the present day flavour of the subject, and also indicate trends and directions in this important area of materials.
ICLS 2 : The Foundations of the Digital Wirless World , Andrew J. Viterbi
Price : $ 85
About the book : This volume has been compiled from the manuscripts of the Centenary Lecture by A. J. Viterbi presented at the Indian Institute of Science as well as from his papers which represent the milestones from his half-century career in the information and communication sciences with principal application to wireless systems.
ICLS 3: Science and Sustainable Food Secutiry , M. S. Swaminathan
Price : $ 111
About the book : This book provides a roadmap for achieving sustainable agricultural advance and food security in an era of climate change and global economic melt-down. The contents include a description of the paradigm shift under the leadership of the author, from a green to an evergreen revolution necessary for advancing productivity in perpetuity without ecological harm. Science and Sustainable Food Security shows many methods of linking ecological security with livelihood security and provides a scientific basis for entering an era of biohappiness based on the sustainable and equitable use of biodiversity. Also, methods of adaptation to the impact of global warming are described. The book will prove invaluable to all interested in sustainable human security and happiness.
ICLS 4: Title: Watching Ultrafast molecular motions with 2D IR Chemical Exchange Spectroscopy Author: Michael D. Fayer
Year of Publication: 2011 Number of pages: 373 (Hardbound) Price: $ 170
About the book: This monograph is a written rendition of the Indian Institute of Science Centenary Lecture presented by Michael D. Fayer in 2008. In the lecture and in the monograph, he addresses the problem of how to experimentally examine fast molecular processes that occur under thermal equilibrium conditions without changing them.
ICLS 5: Title: Tailoring Surfaces: Modifying Surface Composition and Structure for Applications in Tribology, Biology and Catalysis
Author: Nicholas D. Spencer
Year of Publication: 2011 Number of Pages: 666 (Hardbound) Price: $ 220
About the book: The focus of this book is surface modification, with the goal of tailoring materials for a specific application. By means of this approach, ideal bulk properties of a material (such as its tensile strength, temperature, stability, density, or even cost) can be combined with optimized surface properties, such as hardness, biocompatibility, low or high friction adhesion, water repellency or wettability, or catalytic activity. The works of the author – many of his crucial papers are included – deal with the understanding and modification of surfaces and span fields including catalysis, analytical surface science, self-assembled monlayers, tribology, biomaterials, superhydrophobocity and polymer coatings.
