General Information

When does the semester start at IISc?

The Semester starts from the 1st working day of Augustfor Regular (August) admissions.

The Semester starts from the 1st working day of January for Mid-Year admissions.

What are the programs available at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore? How can I get into IISc?

Please see here for details of the various Degree Programmes at IISc. A flowchart of the basic qualifications such as previous academic qualifications, national entrance exams, etc., required for the degree programmes at IISc is also provided.

Is there an NRI/ Management quota at IISc?

No, there is no NRI/ Management quota for admissions at IISc. The candidate has to apply through the regular admission portal.

How does one fill the online application form for admissions?

I wish to apply for 3 departments/ disciplines. Should I apply through a single application or should I fill in three separate application forms?

One application form is sufficient to apply to 3 departments/ disciplines in the Research/ Course programmes.

Can I submit multiple applications for the same programme at IISc?

Applicants can submit only one application per programme. Please note that Multiple submission of applications for the same programme is not permitted and if found, the application will not be considered for the admission process. There is no restriction in applying for more than one programme (For eg, you can submit one application for M Tech, one application for M Mgt, and one for Research programme).

I am a CFTI graduate applying for M Tech/ M Des programme. Should I register at COAP?

  • Case I: Candidates graduating from CFTI with a valid GATE score and intending to apply for M.Tech. Admission in participating institutes should register at COAP with their valid GATE score(s).
  • Case II: Candidates graduating from CFTI with BE/B.Tech. or equivalent degree and a CGPA ≥ 8.0 (on a scale of 10) can apply directly to M.Tech. Admission in participating departments without registering at COAP.Click here for more information regarding M. Tech through CFTI (without GATE).

I am an AMIE degree holder; am I eligible for M.Tech./Research programs?

B.E./B.Tech. equivalent examinations of Professional Societies, recognized by MoE/UPSC/AICTE (e.g., AMIE by Institutions of Engineers), are eligible. Candidates enrolled up to 31.05.2013 with professional societies (e.g., AMIE) recognized by MoE are eligible to apply.

I have a Diploma, and I am an AMIE degree holder; am I eligible to apply to M.Tech./ Research programs?

B.E./B.Tech. equivalent examinations of Professional Societies, recognized by MoE/UPSC/AICTE (e.g AMIE by Institutions of Engineers). Note: Candidates enrolled upto 31.05.2013 with professional societies (e.g AMIE) recognized by MoE are only eligible to apply.

What are the criteria for applying to M.Tech./M.Des./M Mgt/ M. Engg/ MSc?

I have submitted my application but need to update my national entrance test score/ rank (e.g., GATE, JEST etc.) that was published recently. How can I do so?

You can update your national entrance test details after submitting your application until the last date specified. Login to the admissions dashboard from the IISc Admissions portal. From the menu on the left side, click on the link ‘Update Your National Entrance Test Result(s)’. Select the application number for which you would like to update the results. Enter the score/marks and click on Save/Update button.

What is the duration of M.Tech./M.Des./M Mgt/ MSc programs?

The duration is 2 years (4 semesters).

What is the duration of M.Engg programs?

The duration is 1 years (2 semesters).

Integrated Ph.D. Program

I have a degree from a CFTI. Can I apply for the Integrated PhD programme without JEST/JAM?

No, the waiver of a national entrance test for CFTI applicants with a 4-year degree and CGPA ≥ 8.0/10.0 is only allowed for regular Ph.D./ M Tech (Res) programmes. Integrated Ph.D. applicants must meet eligibility criteria mentionedhere.

What are the streams/disciplines available in the Integrated Ph.D. program?

Integrated Ph.D. programs are available in Biological, Chemical, Physical, and Mathematical Sciences.

What is the duration of the Integrated Ph.D. programme?

The duration is 7 years.

Research Programs (M.Tech. (Res)/ Ph.D.)

I have a degree from a CFTI. Can I apply for Ph.D. without GATE?

Yes, graduates of CFTI institutions with a minimumCGPA of 8.0/10.0 and a course duration of at least 4 years can apply for Ph.D. without a national entrance test.

I have a degree from an institution listed as a CFTI in other websites. But it is not listed under the list of CFTIs on the Admissions Website or on the Admissions Portal. Can I apply to the Ph.D. programme under the CFTI mode of entry?

IISc periodically updates the list of CFTIs relevant to our degree programmes. Only these institutions are considered for the CFTI mode of entry for the Research programme at IISc.

I have a B.E./B.Tech. degree. Can I apply for the Ph.D. programme?

Yes, graduates with a B.E./B.Tech. degree along with GATE/ NET JRF is eligible to apply for Ph.D/ M Tech(Res) programme.

I have a B.E./B.Tech. degree from CFTI with CGPA 8.0/10. Can I apply for the M Tech (Res) programme?

Yes, graduates with a B.E./B.Tech. degree from CFTI with CGPA 8.0/10 is eligible to apply for M Tech(Res) programme.

NOTE: Graduates of any course with a minimum duration of FOUR years, from any Centrally Funded Technical Institution (including IIIT in PPP mode) with a minimum CGPA of 8 out of 10 or its equivalent may be considered for admission to M.Tech (Res.) by respective Department under project mode i.e. the stipend/fellowship for such admitted students will be from the project being executed by the Department concerned.

I am a BE/ B Tech candidate (non- CFTI) with no valid Gate score. Am I eligible for M.Tech. (Res) program?

All BE/ B Tech/ B Sc (Engg.) (non- CFTI) candidates need to have a valid GATE score to apply for M Tech(Res) programme.

Can I apply specifically to M.Tech. (Res) or to Ph.D. in the online Research form?

No, you cannot apply specifically to M.Tech. (Res) or to Ph.D. program in the Research online form, there is no such option in the Research form.  You can give your option of joining only to M.Tech. (Res) or to Ph.D. program at the time of interview to the department interview committee.

I have a 3 year B Sc degree. Am I eligible to apply for the M.Tech. (Res) program?

No, you are not eligible. You need to have a M Sc degree with a valid GATE score to apply for the M.Tech. (Res) program.

I have a B Tech degree with an MBA degree will I have to write the National Entrance Test for Ph.D. in Management Studies and Ecological Sciences?

Candidates with MBA degrees (post BE/B Tech) do not need to write any National Entrance Tests. You will be called for an interview based on your performance in the qualifying degree.

A minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 6 years.

What is the duration of M.Tech. (Res)?

The duration of M.Tech. (Res) is 2.5 years.

When will the Mid-year admissions start/ forms be available for the Ph D program?

Mid-year admissions for specific Ph.D. programmes will be announced and applications solicited in October, for the semester starting on 1st January of the next year. Interviews will be conducted in November. Please visit this Admissions website by October for more details.

OCI/PIO Candidates

I am an OCI candidate. Am I eligible to apply for IISc programs?

How are OCI/PIO candidates categorized?

  • OCI/PIO (I): Candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO card before 04.03.2021 and choose to be treated as Indian nationals are considered under the unreserved (open) category.
  • OCI/PIO (F): Candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO card before 04.03.2021 but choose to apply as foreign nationals are considered under the foreign national category.
  • OCI/PIO(F): Candidates who obtained their OCI/PIO card after 04.03.2021 are considered foreign nationals and can apply only for foreign national supernumerary seats.

What are the admission criteria for OCI/PIO (F) candidates?

OCI/PIO (F) candidates are treated as foreign nationals and must meet the eligibility criteria for foreign applicants. They can apply only for foreign national supernumerary seats through the international student admission portal.

What are the admission criteria for OCI/PIO (I) candidates?

OCI/PIO (I) candidates are treated as Indian nationals but can only apply under the unreserved (open) category and are not eligible for EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, or ST reservations.

Can an OCI/PIO candidate apply in both categories (OCI/PIO (F) and OCI/PIO (I))?

No. Candidates must choose only one category while applying. If an OCI/PIO candidate is found to have applied under both OCI/PIO (F) and OCI/PIO (I), their application will be cancelled due to the use of unfair means.
