Topic: Product information models in PLM
Date:    Thursday, the 25th January, 2018
Time:    at  4.00 pm
Venue:   Faculty Hall, Main Building

Product Life cycle Management (PLM) is a computational framework that enables capture, representation, retrieval and reuse of product information across the product lifecycle to support collaborative product development. Product information model forms the backbone of PLM.  The traditional CAD model of a product is proving to be inadequate to support various tasks in the product life cycle. Presently the CAD model represents only the shape of the part and user intervention is required for both capturing and interpreting other information pertaining to function, behaviour, material and manufacturing of the product. This talk will describe the evolution of product models to meet the emerging requirements of product development and manufacturing.

B. Gurumoorthy is a Professor in the Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. His research interests are in the areas of CAD, Product Information modelling, Computational Metrology and, Product design and prototyping.  He did his B.Tech at IIT Madras in 1982 followed by M.E. and Ph.D at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA in 1984 and 1987 respectively (all in Mechanical Engineering).  Two technologies (automatic feature recognition and visual interactive solids) developed in his laboratory have been licensed to industry.
