Reading the Past
Understanding the past often leads us to interpret why and how the present has evolved. This series will explore the historical underpinnings that have shaped the various facets of the modern world.
Panjab: Journeys Through Fault Lines
Abstract: The speaker will draw from his book Panjab: Journeys Through Fault Lines (2019) which mixes reportage with contextual history and memoir. It deals with colonization, Partition, the Khalistan movement, agrarian and economic and social crises. The book’s prognosis about the region was dire and it argued that to heal there was an urgent need that both people and policymakers look at Panjab as a post-conflict land. Since the book came out, as a surprise, or perhaps a way to heal, Panjab has risen and mounted the farmers’ struggle along with other north Indian states. The lecture will briefly dwell on that as well.
