Abstract :
Interfacial electrochemistry as a fundamental science has recently had a resurgence of interest, though traditionally the topic is burdened by its roots in solution-phase chemistry. The important role that interfaces between electrodes and electrolytes play in surface phenomena has led to the continuous search for new components of electrochemical cells, particularly those related to energy conversion and storage, sensors, and electron transfer in biological systems. In the recent literature, several unconventional materials have been proposed for use as electrodes and electrolytes.
Our group has been involved in understanding both the fundamental and applied aspects of various interfacial properties, under the broad umbrella of ‘materials electrochemistry’. The present lecture will cover some of our research on different families of electrode materials, including transition metal nitrides / carbides, layered chalcogenides, graphite/graphene, self assembled organic thin films, and Langmuir-Blodgett films. The main focus of our research is on unravelling the redox chemistries of small molecules at electrochemical interfaces, which will determine their utility in device applications. Efforts towards fabricating prototypes of energy storage devices and sensors will be highlighted as well.
About the Speaker :
S Sampath, Professor at the Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry focuses on research interests that revolve around understanding physical chemistry of interfaces with particular relevance to electrochemical systems. His contributions to the development of new electrode and electrolyte materials and in understanding their catalytic activities, have led to new avenues in energy storage systems such as rechargeable batteries and fuel cells. His recent work includes studies on next generation batteries based on metal-air systems, sensors and supercapacitors. He has several international patents and publications to his credit. His contributions have been recognized by various scientific organizations and currently he serves as an Associate Editor of an ACS journal besides being in the Internationasl advsiory board of several
international journals.
