A new women’s hostel block supported by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has been constructed at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). It was inaugurated on February 5, 2020 at 1 pm by Shri. Jayesh Shah, Executive Director (HRS), BPCL and Prof. Anurag Kumar, Director, IISc. Dignitaries from BPCL as well as senior faculty members, staff and students of IISc were present during the occasion.
The BPCL women’s hostel block has 158 single-seater rooms for women students and 7 guest rooms. Each room is self-sufficient, with a table, chair, cot, cupboard, bookshelf and rack. The building has ground plus three floors. Each floor has been designed with necessary facilities according to the prevailing guidelines for women students to stay comfortably. The total built-up area is 53539 sq. ft. (4973 sq. m.). The total cost of the project is estimated to be over Rs. 18 crores.
IISc is India’s premier institution for higher education and research. The Institute is keen on encouraging more women students to pursue careers in science and engineering, in order to address the gender inequality in science and technology. It has produced several outstanding women scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs.
Currently about 25% of students at IISc are women. This proportion has been increasing continuously in recent times. To support this increasing number, the Institute needed to establish a new women’s hostel with modern amenities.
Women students admitted to IISc’s academic programmes are selected through the rigorous KVPY, JEE, GATE and other national schemes. The cut-offs for admissions are among the highest in the country. Some of the brightest women students and researchers from all over India are admitted into IISc. Several women students also come from disadvantaged sections of the community and from backward regions and far-flung areas, and therefore require sufficient, secure and comfortable accommodation on campus.
