PARASPAR : Webinar by Samira Agnihotri

Paraspar, an initiative of the Office of Communications (OoC) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), is a platform for conversations about knowledge systems, particularly science.

PARASPAR

Invites you to a webinar series on Science and Society
Science has emerged both as an instrument of power and a tool of emancipation. Owing to this two-pronged nature, no other system of knowledge affect the society so acutely and immediately like science. In this webinar series we attempt to elucidate the ideal relationship of science with society.

Title : The Darkness of the Evergreen Forest (Click here for the poster)

Abstract: Classical scientific research methods that involve “field” work usually include engaging with local communities for labour or for interviews. Local knowledge is at best ignored, and these communities are rarely recognised as producers of knowledge or as equals in the processes of exploration. In this talk, Samira draws upon fifteen years of interdisciplinary research in the Biligiri Rangan Hills of South Karnataka, home to the Solega people, to question this mindset, as well as the idea of science and scientists being separate from the milieu in which they exist.

Using examples from her own work, Samira emphasises the importance of a dialogue between different knowledge systems, and on the benefits of such two-way learnings, not just in building a more democratic approach to the practice of science, but to the generation of knowledge itself.
