I Didn’t Know It but Now I Do — Understanding without Italics (Click here for poster)
Abstract: When Indian writers write in English they are often asked to dwell on which words they choose to translate, which words they choose to explain with footnotes and what they leave in Italics. In this talk I will be exploring the implications of these choices and the great joyous possibilities of choosing to write as if everyone can understand you already. What does this mean in practical terms for the writer? What does it mean for the reader? How can we learn more about our wonderfully, complicated country through the liberating potential of art and a polyglot tongue. To this end, I will be using examples from my recent collection of short stories The Women Who Forgot to Invent Facebook and also from TV shows I watched when I was supposed to be writing.
