Political and Cultural Roles of Sufis in Medieval and Early Modern India (Poster)
Abstract: The lecture is aimed at understanding the critical significance of Sufism as an important strand of Islamic traditions in the political and cultural history of medieval and early modern India. Using a variety of Sufi literature in Persian and Indian vernaculars, the crucial themes to be discussed include Sufi miracle as a source of authority, music as a hotly contested issue, the debate over the possible role of Sufis in the process of conversion to Islam or more properly in Islamisation as cultural accretion. In general, Sufi inclusiveness and broad-based political framework were deployed in creating a system that has served as the lasting legacy of India’s image as a peace-loving nation, which could successfully handle its religious and cultural diversity. The Sufis’ role in the making of this important feature of India’s political and cultural achievements is the central theme of this lecture.
