On 11 April 2026, Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D (DDR&D) and Chairman, DRDO, inaugurated the National Facility for Compo-Rheo Die Casting (CRDC) in the presence of Prof Govindan Rangarajan, Director, IISc, on campus. The event also marked the formal handover of project deliverables matured under the joint research projects of DRDO, industry, academia, the Raman Centre of Excellence, and IISc.
The facility aims to develop advanced compo-rheo die-casting technology for producing high-performance nano-metal matrix composites. It will focus on process optimisation, numerical modelling of casting and solidification, and the development of critical components such as heat sinks for power electronic systems. The technology has multiple uses in civil applications.

During the event, live operations of the Neuromorphic Dot Product Engine, showcasing cutting-edge advancements in computing technology, were demonstrated. Key project deliverables developed by the collaborating teams, such as algorithms and prototypes, were formally handed over, signifying the successful completion of targeted research objectives and the transition of technologies towards adoption and further development. The occasion highlighted the strong collaborative framework of the DIA-CoE between DRDO and IISc in fostering innovation and accelerating technology translation, being coordinated by the Directorate of Futuristic Technology Management under the Technology Management Cluster.

Distinguished dignitaries and senior officials from DRDO, and researchers and project investigators from IISc attended the programme. The importance of sustained collaboration between academia and research organisations to strengthen national technological capabilities was emphasised by all the DRDO lab directors and faculty members at the Institute.
