Whither the nation? The relevance of Tagore’s ideas in our times (Poster)

Abstract: This talk re-assesses the writing of Rabindranath Tagore who was a man far ahead of his times; an iconic figure and versatile writer, he consolidated traditions of intellectual thought and created an environment of critique and dissent that strengthened these lines of inquiry. Standing tall against the anti-colonial movement that was sweeping the incipient nation, Tagore in his writings, emphasized the limits of nationalism which he foresees as catastrophic. At the contemporary juncture, where populist brands of nationalism intersect with increased cultural separatism, we are compelled to ask: what do we take away from Tagore’s ideas of global citizenship, nationhood and humanity that he articulates in his fiction as well as non-fiction?
